Orthopedic Diagnostic Tests & Imaging Technology

Imaging Services at Orthopedic Specialists of SW Florida include an advanced digital radiography system and MRI. Radiography, or X-ray, is the simplest way for a physician to diagnose a bone injury or disease, such as a fracture or arthritis. Traditionally this is done by viewing X-ray film on a light box.

Digital radiography is a cutting edge X-ray that provides more detail than a traditional X-ray and eliminates the need to develop films, which reduces patient wait time. Although X-rays are an excellent way to view the bones in the body, they are incapable of viewing the soft tissues.

Digital MRI
A digital MRI provides a fast scan and offers a definitive diagnosis that identifies the degree and extent of the injury or disorder, without radiation. An MRI provides detailed images of ligaments, tendons, cartilage, nerves, and muscles, as well as bones, to identify injury, damage, and the existence of conditions like osteoarthritis.

EMG Testing & Nerve Conduction Studies
An EMG (electromyography) test assesses the health of the muscles by measuring their electrical activity. This test is utilized when a patient has signs or symptoms of a muscle or nerve disorder such as tingling, numbness, weakness, cramping or muscle pain. A finding that there is muscle or nerve damage may be due to a herniated disc, ALS or another disease that damages the nerves and/or muscles. It is also used to diagnose the cause of muscle weakness, paralysis and twitching.

Nerve conduction studies measure the electrical signals that control the muscles. This test helps to locate damage in the peripheral nervous system, which are the nerves that lead away from the brain and spinal cord. This is a helpful study used to identify carpal tunnel syndrome.
